Kirk Tousaw is barrister and advocate based on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. His practice, Tousaw Law Corporation, focuses on cannabis-related issues including criminal defence, regulatory compliance and Charter-based strategic litigation. Kirk is a founding Board member of the Sensible BC Society, serves on the Board of Directors of NORML Canada and previously served on the Board of the the BC Civil Liberties Association. These non-profits groups work tirelessly on critical law reform issues.
Kirk Tousaw began practicing law in 1998 in the United States and has been a practicing member of the Law Society of British Columbia since 2005. Academically, Kirk holds a Bachelor’s of Art in political philosophy (Michigan State University) a Juris Doctor, cum laude (Wayne State University School of Law) and a Master’s in Law (University of British Columbia Faculty of Law). His Master's thesis focused on cannabis prohibition in Canada.
Kirk has written and spoken extensively on issues related to drug policy, privacy, religious freedom and criminal justice policy. He has consulted with Health Canada regularly on matters of cannabis law reform and has participated in various roundtables with the Cannabis Legalization Task Force and the cannabis policy secretariats of both the federal and BC provincial governments. In addition, Kirk has had the privilege of testifying several times before the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights of the House of Commons and also before the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs.
In recognition of his work and advocacy on behalf of medical cannabis patients and providers, Kirk was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal / Médaille du jubilé de dia on January 24, 2013 by Canada at the nomination of the late Senator Pierre Claude Nolin, chair of the Senate's Special Committee on Cannabis Policy.
Kirk is a father of four, husband of one and volunteers regularly coaching youth sports in his local community.
